Assignment 1
Since my work group has yet to decide on a topic, I decided to research the top 5 cell phone carriers in the US using google trends to see what carriers have been more heavily searched over the past 5 years. Based on my experience in selling cell phones for the past year in Maine, I have gained a reasonable base of knowledge in the industry and what people are generally looking for. The carriers that I searched for are: Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular. Generally, Verizon and AT&T are known as the top "premium" carriers within the US with Sprint and T-Mobile being considered "budget" carriers. US Cellular is fit into a very specific niche of the market that they have utilized as a marketing strategy where they have coverage where the other carriers do not. That has served them well across the US in more rural areas like Northern Maine, a good portion of the Midwest, and vast stretches along the Canadian border through the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wyoming, Vermont, and Northern New Hampshire.
The popularity in the search results pretty well matched up with my expectations based on the coverage areas and popularity of carriers. AT&T and Verizon were nearly identical in their search popularity for the entire 5 years except for a small dip in December of 2015 where AT&T took a slight lead over Verizon when they merged with DirecTV. Verizon however rebounded in February of 2017 when it started offering unlimited data. T-Mobile was the third most searched carrier which follows along with it being the third best coverage and had a big spike when they released their "Better in buildings" campaign in September of 2014, however that spike was matched almost equally by all carriers with a major iPhone launch at the same time. Sprint is generally a carrier that people stray away from if they do not live in or very near to major cities based on coverage availability in even slightly rural areas past major city outskirts. The least popular and almost stagnant search history belonged to US Cellular which, as was mentioned earlier, has a very niche market that is dedicated to the most rural areas of the US only.
Looking outside the US, there are only two carriers who are searched consistently, those are AT&T and T-Mobile. The reason for that is that they are the only two GSM bandwitdh carriers of the 5. GSM being the international bandwidth for Cell phone towers, they are the only carriers whose phones can be used in nearly any country with cell phone service. The other carriers are CDMA Bandwidth based and thus are only applicable to US service other than the ability to roam with travel pass on Verizon.
