1. The top 5 countries to which Maine exports are Canada, Germany, China, Malaysia, and Japan.  This is not surprising as there is very easy access for trade of goods to Canada based on proximity, Germany and Japan are two of the largest growing business countries globally, and China and Malaysia are some of the largest importers and exporters of goods.  As Germany continues to grow as a cornerstone of international business, I would believe that they are among our most important trade partners moving forward. 2. The top 5 PRIZM groups in Windham, ME are Fast Track Families (Upscale Middle Age Family Mix), New Homesteaders (Upscale younger Mostly w/ Kids), Pickup Patriarchs (Upscale Older Mostly w/o Kids), White Picket Fences (Midscale Younger Family Mix), and Hometown Retired (Midscale Older Mostly w/o Kids.  I am not too familiar with Windham as a community as I have not lived here very long and havent really gotten involved in community events, however most of what I ...

Cases 3 and 4

Case 3 1. If I were to be starting a diet, I would be looking for an solution to an extended problem.  The problem for me would be that I'm overweight and need to diet and exercise and am looking for a plan to make it easier and help me in my goals.  I would look at all the information possible from these sources and also ask my friends and family if they have any personal experience with any of the programs.  This would help my decision as to which plan I would go with. 2. Each of the companies uses a different variance on the same type of idea.  Limit caloric intake and exercise when possible to lose weight.  They have all been proven effective in their own way, so the value that they build is largely in their marketing and what endorsements they can brand for themselves. 3. Determinant attributes for the three companies would be Meal availability, exercise required, advice of friends and family, and for me, the men's program. 4. Jenny Craig and Weight...

US Cell Phone Carriers

Image
The perceptual map here displays the coverage reliability and cost of Unlimited Talk, Text, and Data (TTD) for the 5 major carriers in the US.  The cost is based on single line cost assuming no other carrier discounts or installment billing contracts or enhanced line access fees due to subsidization of the device being used. As you can see in the perceptual map, the provider who has the greatest coverage across all of the US is Verizon, and is still a bit more affordable for a single line plan of unlimited data than is AT&T who is their next closest competitor for coverage reliability.  T-Mobile and Sprint are able to provide their unlimited service cheaper than Verizon and AT&T largely because they rely heavily on the infrastructure of their bandwidth competition.  That is to say that because Sprint is a CDMA network, it is able to use Verizon's CDMA signal towers to provide a roaming signal to many of their customers without the need to put up their own towers...

Module 2 discussion

The sharing economy in the ride sharing market specifically has had large impacts on the economic value of public transportation.  Uber being the pioneer in the market really was able to revolutionize privatized public transportation.  This has allowed for any person who is able to get and hold a driver's license and good driving record to become a driver for a company, but allow for the driver to make a decent living.  This has been nice since it is less restrictive than being a taxi driver, especially in bigger cities like New York where you need a medallion to be able to drive a cab and there is a quota restriction on the medallions.  This has also had major environmental impacts by allowing those who were opposed to traditional cabs but lived too far from their jobs to be able to walk or bike another option.  This means that more people can commute with ride-sharing and thus don't need to own vehicles themselves, or at least not have to operate them nearly a...

Assignment 1

Since my work group has yet to decide on a topic, I decided to research the top 5 cell phone carriers in the US using google trends to see what carriers have been more heavily searched over the past 5 years.  Based on my experience in selling cell phones for the past year in Maine, I have gained a reasonable base of knowledge in the industry and what people are generally looking for.  The carriers that I searched for are: Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular.  Generally, Verizon and AT&T are known as the top "premium" carriers within the US with Sprint and T-Mobile being considered "budget" carriers.  US Cellular is fit into a very specific niche of the market that they have utilized as a marketing strategy where they have coverage where the other carriers do not.  That has served them well across the US in more rural areas like Northern Maine, a good portion of the Midwest, and vast stretches along the Canadian b...

Uber Market Share

Uber has become a cornerstone in the ride sharing market that has swept the nation.  It uses a marketing strategy of being available starting in the biggest cities in America and has now spread to smaller cities and towns by being good for both the consumers and the drivers for Uber.  The product that Uber provides is an on call ride service that is accessible through a smartphone app to call, track, and pay for a private taxi driven by an everyday person like yourself in a city that they know.  It is an excellent service, especially for a tourist or vacationer in an unfamiliar city.  They use a competitive pricing strategy too that bases its pricing on popular events going on in the area as well as number of drivers available.  Its availability that is spreading throughout the US is a wonderful for the business as it is becoming attractive to have more people drive for Uber to make some supplementary income to their normal day job or as a fu...
